How Does AI Search Choose Which Businesses to Recommend?
AI assistants do not rank businesses the way a search results page does. They assemble an answer from sources they can fetch, parse, and corroborate. In practice that means a business gets recommended when its information is consistent across the web, its pages directly answer the question being asked, its content is machine-readable without JavaScript, and third-party sources — directories, reviews, press, and profiles — agree about who it is and what it does.

What do AI systems actually pull from?
Most assistants combine three inputs: what the model learned during training, live retrieval from a search index or their own crawler, and structured business data from sources such as Google Business Profile and major directories. A recommendation typically appears when all three agree.
That is why a brand-new page rarely gets cited on its own. Corroboration across independent sources is the mechanism.
Which signals can you control?
These are the levers that reliably move AI visibility for a local business.
- Entity consistency: identical business name, address, phone, and hours everywhere they appear.
- Answer-shaped content: pages whose headings are the questions people actually ask, with the answer immediately underneath.
- Structured data that accurately describes the visible page — Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, Article, FAQ where genuinely applicable.
- Crawlability: server-rendered HTML, a clean sitemap, and robots rules that do not block AI crawlers you want to reach.
- Third-party corroboration: reviews, directory listings, local press, and profiles that repeat the same facts.
- Specificity: named services, named service areas, real prices, and real outcomes beat vague marketing copy.
Why do vague pages get skipped?
A language model composing an answer needs an extractable claim. "We deliver world-class digital solutions" contains nothing to extract. "Custom websites for Columbus med spas from $300 to start plus $100 per month, launched in two to four weeks" contains a service, a location, a price, and a timeline — four facts that can be lifted directly into an answer.
Write for extraction. That single change does more for AI visibility than most technical work.
How do you know it is working?
Ask the assistants directly and repeatedly. Query ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode for the questions your customers ask, record whether you appear and what is cited, and track it monthly. Then watch referral traffic from AI sources in analytics — it appears as small but unusually high-intent traffic.

Can you pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
Not for the organic answer itself. Recommendations come from what the assistant can retrieve and corroborate, which is why AEO work focuses on being findable and consistent rather than on placement.
How long does it take to appear in AI answers?
For most local businesses we see first citations in roughly 60 to 90 days after the content, schema, and crawlability work is live, though this varies by competition and existing footprint.
Does blocking AI crawlers hurt me?
If you block GPTBot, PerplexityBot, or Google-Extended in robots.txt, those systems cannot fetch your pages and you remove yourself as a citation candidate for them.
