What are the realistic price bands for a business website?
Website pricing is really pricing for three separate things: the build, the hosting and maintenance, and the ongoing marketing work that makes the site produce leads. Quotes vary wildly because agencies bundle those three differently.
- DIY site builders: roughly $20–$60/month. You do the design, the writing, the SEO, and the fixing.
- Freelancer build: typically $1,500–$6,000 once, plus separate hosting. Quality and follow-up vary widely.
- Agency custom build: typically $5,000–$25,000+ once for a small-to-midsize business site, with maintenance billed separately.
- Subscription website programs: a small setup fee plus $100–$500/month covering build, hosting, updates, and often marketing.
What actually drives the price up?
The line items that move a quote are rarely visual. They are page count, custom functionality, content production, and whether search work is included.
- Page count and unique templates — ten distinct page types costs more than ten pages of the same template.
- Content: writing, photography, and video are frequently the largest hidden cost.
- Integrations: booking systems, payments, CRMs, patient intake, and inventory each add scope.
- Accessibility and performance work done properly rather than bolted on with a plugin.
- Whether SEO, AEO, and ongoing publishing are inside the price or sold separately.
What ongoing costs should you plan for?
A website is not a one-time purchase. Even a finished site carries recurring costs: hosting, a domain, SSL, software updates, security monitoring, backups, and content changes. On a self-managed WordPress site those arrive as separate invoices — hosting, premium plugin licenses, and a developer on retainer for the month a plugin update breaks something.

How do you tell whether a quote is fair?
Ask three questions of any proposal. First: what happens after launch, and what does it cost? Second: who owns the site, the domain, and the analytics accounts? Third: is search work included, or is the site simply a brochure that will need a second budget to get found?
A cheap build that needs a $2,000 rescue in year two is not cheap. A high-price build with no ongoing search work is a very expensive brochure.
